ATR-42 Safire
SAFIRE is a scientific research service unit. Its missions are: technical and logistical management of the French fleet of atmospheric research and remote sensing aircraft, and scientific configurations and basic instrumentation, and their aeronautical certification the scientific processing of the measurements taken by this basic instrumentation and the archiving of the corresponding databases the interface with external users for technical and operational aspects, in particular for service and consultancy activities. SAFIRE currently manages 3 aircraft, a Falcon 20, an ATR 42, a Piper Aztec owned by CNES and Météo France. Purchased second-hand, they have undergone extensive modifications in order to integrate instruments: creation of large openings in the fuselage, transformation of portholes into sensor supports, installation of probe supports under the wings and on the fuselage, etc.
